USS Gurnard, a Sturgeon -class submarine, was built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. She was launched in May of 1967. In March of 1976, she was deployed to the Arctic region, where she set a new record of 42 days of operations during SUBICEX 1-76.
All hands were given the opportunity to stand on "top of the world" after Gurnard surfaced at the North Pole in April of 1976.
USS Virginia (SSN 774)
The newest submarine class of the United States. This is a magnificent ship. She has a hydrodynamically designed hull form and a lethal payload of weapons.
She is pictured here on a
surface transit into a visiting port of call in the Atlantic Ocean after having completed her initial acceptance trials for the U.S. Navy.
